This Jewelry box says Robert Nermith or Robert Nesmith? It looks like it could say S or a R in the last name... I cannot tell...

Those letters are the roman numerals for the year... (There would be no Y in it.) MCMLIII is 1953. (Look at it under magnification)
Google: Design Gifts Intern'l INC robert nesmith you will find them They are trinket boxes. People seem to spell his name all kinds of ways. These are from the 70's, apparently.
