I had found this hammer (what appears to be) at a local antique shop and thought it was interesting. I paid little for nothing for it but it just looked so old! I have not gotten it appraised yet and hoping to do so in the future. The replicas I have seen online have the leather around the wood and the stone. Have no idea what kind of stone it is but is extremely heavy. For now, it remains a conversation piece in my den. :)

This is a stone head wrapped in leather, or what. You can leave 4 pix & I want to know what it is too. Actually looks like a lead mallet to me.

Thank you! I have added three more pictures. I looks like stone. Grey. Let me know what it is. Am interested!

How big is this hammer? I wouldn't think a stone that size would be extremely heavy. Also looks metallic to me, because of the wear pattern and shape. Clean up a bit of it and see what color it is under all that grime. Metal is colder than stone, too.

looks like a lead hammer used for putting lead weights on rims for auto's I remember seeing one being used if thats lead ...scrape it to see if its soft...

You are right! Old lead mallet! Lead shines when I scrape it. Thank you all so much for the help in the identification!

This is a lead, dead blow mallet. The head of it is made of lead because lead is softer than the metal you intend to strike so you don't cause damage. They were commonly used for vehicles like early Corvettes with knock off rims.

many high voltage cable splicers fashioned there own hammers out of lead to reform the lead sheath cover for solder fill, basically lead on lead, minimizes damage to wire splices underneath. early telegraph spice covers were also lead
