    Good Evening CW Members----12:00 AM)2016-6-4
I found this oil on canvas on Monday at the thrift store, this painting was done by Finland artist"Lauri Salonen"This landscape scene depicted a full moon in a forest in winter season with a small camp, lake and trees, always when I look a landscape painting i closely look some detail from a distance and this one is very well done, even the reflection of the light coming from the small window reflect on the ice of the lake and what about the moon itself, very talented artist, the dark canvas is nail to the stretcher.

The frame measure 39.75 inch by 29.50 inch, canvas 34 inch by 24 inch.

    Thanks for Viewing.
    Alan

    --------------------------Lauri Salonen (1918-1986)-------------------------------
Born in Nastola, Finland on May 11, 1918, he died in Helsinki, Finland on June 20, 1986. He moved to Canada in early 1951, but the exact date is uncertain. He landed in Montreal, and then made his way to Toronto, which is where his family relocated to. From that point on, Lauri Salonen was based in Toronto, although he frequently returned to Finland. He happened to be in Finland at the time of his death in 1986, which is why he died there and not in Toronto.

He primarily painted with oils on masonite. Many of his works were northern landscapes - lakes, forests and the like. He also did some still-life, usually something like flowers in a vase. He usually signed in the lower right corner of his paintings, but sometimes signed the lower left corner. His signature is very distinctive with the "swooshing" S on "Salonen." Later in life, he painted under a pseudonym - "Jephta Kent," after the character from the John Jakes novels. That signature was always signed with block capitals, almost as if it was being simply printed, and it was usually in the lower right corner.

Information provided by Simon Dimuantes, the artist's grandson who also writes:

In the 1960s, my grandfather headlined an art show in Toronto that was opened by then-mayor Philip Givens. Unfortunately, I do now know the name of the exhibit, but according to my mother, my grandfather did some unusual paintings for that show which featured vividly colored outer space scenes with stars and galaxies. I have personally never seen any of these works, but they sound very different from the many works of my grandfather's that I have seen.
