I found this old wooden box in my shed.The box is locked and I do not have a key. I think the handles and hinges are brass. There is numbers and marking on the bottom beneath the handle of the box, can be seen in first picture.Dimensions are: L 20.6 W 20.7 H 6.5 .Can anyone please help identify it as I haven't yet been able to.
Can you provide some dimensions and a pic of it opened? Old wooden box doesn't say much.
Hi fhr thank you for your reply. I am unable to open the box as it is locked and I have no key did not want to break it to get into it before I knew what it was. Here's the dimensions:
L 20.6
W 20.7
H6.5
That's the British broad arrow, so it was made for that government. It also has a crown over "IS"(?) & that over "881". Don't ask why, but I have a feeling that it may have something to do with military photography. Maybe WWI. Just reminds me of the kind of box & security that would be put on air reconnaissance films. Just a guess actually.

Try the ole bobby pin or bent paperclip method. Most old locks open turning counter clockwise. This is the old skeleton key type which are easy. A locksmith can make a key for you. Now, we want to know if there is anything inside of interest ! Bon chance
Hi all, thank you for more interesting info it's getting more and more intriguing it's all so interesting. I have shaken the box and doesn't seem to be anything in there but I'll defiantly get onto trying to open it! There were actually two boxes found but the second was broke but there was an old newspaper in there and an old brown envelope with some kind of powder in it. Along with a shed full of lead newspaper stamps all different font styles and sizes.I'll let you no what's inside as soon as possible. Thank You For all the great info.
Hi I've managed to get the box open but sadly there was not anything inside other than tiny bits of brown paper one with a 1 Stamped in red on it and some green peices. I have added a picture of the inside on a new post.
