I have no idea what this is? Was it the lid to a jar? Is it Chinese? How old could it be? HELP?????

This is the top half of a trinket box.

At jeneric - I humbly apologise for hijacking your post. Efesgirl is so the best at finding thrift store, or market stall finds for just peanuts. Then she regales us with these beautiful things, and triumphantly tells us h0w much she paid for them. ;>)) She is a very smart lady.
