Known as "Dechiwo Devils" (Satyrs)
Intricately designed, early, rare Lorber Dechiwo design of Weller art pottery depicting faun creatures playing in a woodland setting. It is in great condition without chips, cracks or repairs. The simple brown stain with hand rubbed lightened accents enhance the detailed portrayal of Lorber's mythical satyr scene making this large jardiniere an impressive piece. Made in America before 1914. Signed R (Rudolph) Lorber.
On the internet:
The name De-Chi-Wo was coined to note three themes in the Dechiwo line, including De-devils (satyrs), Chi-children, and Wo-women.
Rudolph Lorber (b. 1873) was an Austrian-born ceramics modeller who was living at 97 Russell Street, Dresden in the 1901 census.
Later in 1901 he moved to the small Ohio town of Tiltonsville, where he designed for the Vance Faience Co. pottery.
By 1904 he was in Zanesville, Ohio, where he modelled for the Weller Pottery Co. Apparently in between, September, 1903, to be more exact, he was back in Longton, where he married Maud Sadler.
