Game of Old Maid Card set, antique black and white card set, original has every piece except missing 1 card, only.Family Gift handed down. Not sure of the actual date, appears this set is from the late 1800's.
I have been looking for more information, but I am assuming that Thomson was the Publisher of this set in Cincinatti Ohio.

This is really a dream of a deck!! Thompson also made a game called "Anagrams, Or Words Alive" colorful cover, boxed card game 1880-1900.

A great old set of Old Maid cards, from about 1884. Thomson was bought out by McLoughlin and later those same printed cards came out under the McLoughlin name, with different boxes. What card are you missing?

On rare occasions I see those cards. Sometimes you can find them mixed with other cards and it would be possible to find the #1 card, though you would likely end up having to buy another set to find it.
I hesitate on value, but I will say this. That set, with the box top shown, instructions and cards would probably fetch between $45-$75, possibly a bit more. Collectors often look at condition but I like to look at an items history. Having the torn corner on that old maid tells us a lot about the history of the game and tells us that this particular game was played and enjoyed. The tear was more than likely a player trying to save their hide by marking the card, or better still, torn in anger. I see that so often in sets from the turn of the century, like this one. The old maid is often torn or creased or replaced entirely by another card, appropriately marked "old maid", due to severe damage to the original. I, personally, find that type of imperfection collectible and fun to display. The box and the instruction card are often harder to find than the cards, which seem to outlive the rest. I've seen boxes from that era that actually have the seams sewn with thread, by hand, to keep them together. After all, nights under an oil lamp could be boring. Unlike collectors that seek perfection, I like to see those little signs of human contact. I like a "loved" deck of old cards. Thomson was only in business for about 3 years so you can pretty much be certain of the date, between 1882 and 1884 before being bought out by McLoughlin.
