I was very fortunate last week to acquire this set of Edo Kiriko glass online at an excellent price.
This pair of goblets and bowl have been made by Hanashyo, sometimes spelt Hanasho, a company that has been making Edo Kiriko since 1947 .
The company employs around 20 people who mark out, hand cut with diamond wheels, and finish by buffing, as is the Edo Kiriko way.
Every design on these pieces has been done by hand and incorporate registered Edo Kiriko patterns. Hanashyo have registered four of their own patterns which they use with traditional patterns to make the design.
The design on these pieces is based around lotus. I particularly love the bowl, where the lotus seem to float in a pool of water. When you look at the back of the bowl you can see the battuto-like cutting which gives the watery look. You can also see how fine the cutting is, particularly on the Itotiki (chrysanthemum) Connection pattern.

The bowl is spectacular I agree Blade. I really love Edo Kiriko. No other cut glass is quite the same and it really speaks of the Japanese pride in mastering detailed and time consuming hand work.

So so lovely! I adore Edo Kiriko but, as you say, it's often too expensive to buy new. I'm glad you found this set so affordably. It's a fantastically dazzling find.

I too love Edo Kiriko. For me I love the feel of it as well as the look, all the while I think about the skill and effort needed to create it.
