In the long long ago margarine had to be mixed with a coloring agent and after that one would have a big glob of margarine. Molds like this were made so ones margarine would look like sticks of butter.
One would put the margarine into the four mold slots. The back of the mold would be pushed out and then there would be a stick that looked just a like a stick of butter.
Probably 1940s as after that margarine was sold with the color mixed in and in cubes.
