Trying to track the maker and approximate vintage of this silver compact. It measures 4" x 4" x 1/2", center is an oval faceted sapphire blue stone surrounded by 9 brilliant cut clear stones. Back and sides are etched, while the top is smooth. Any help is appreciated as I am quite new to this subject!
Unmarked usually means something is silver plated and not silver, especially on a piece this large. The color and quality of the center piece tells me it's silver plated.
Have you looked on the inside edges for any identifying marks? The stones are most likely cut glass paste.
The chasing (design work) on it is very pretty!
Look inside for marks. Use a magnifying glass or loupe.
look along edges of mirror and any and all compartments. Would be nice to see the interior.
Unfortunately the mirror is no longer in it. All that is left inside are the sifter and puff. And there are no markings inside.
It's weird - the edge chasing looks Japanese to me, and the back Islamic. I'm betting there is a mark somewhere. Look under the clasp. too.
I'm going for silver plate. The centerpiece is attached with what looks like some sort of tiny rivets. A quality silver compact would have the center piece soldered on vs. putting holes in the lid. If you are still in doubt, let a jeweler look at it.
Not possible to track the maker without any sort of identification marks. Nothing turned up in an Image search.
Thanks for the help, my eyes are almost ready to bleed from searching Images on the 'net for days!
LOL! Take a breath.....I used one of your photos to do a search and nothing even close to resembling it appeared before my eyes.
