Hi, this little green bottle was found on Rowes Bay Creek in Cape Pallarenda beach Townsville, QLD, Australia. It was deep in the Creek Bed under a bridge. I happen to walk around the wet sand, with my nieces and nephew until my whole right leg got sucked into the wet sand and i stood on this little bottle. I thought I had cut my foot but to my surprise reached down the hole my leg made and pulled this bottle up. I looked at it and thought oh its only a bottle I was almost going to throw it away but I didn't. It has a crack on the lip area and it also has a flat lip. On the left and right side of the bottles they have lines going from the lip to the base. So please can someone help me know what this bottle is.

The pontil mould seems indented inward which is consistent with old bottles turn of the century, possibly 1910-1920. Sometimes in the last century a lot of the old city dumps were adjacent to the creeks. There are no marks so identification would be quite difficult. I used to dig up a lot of old dumps here in Canada.

Hi PhilDMorris thank you for your comment. it seemed unusual when I pulled it up. So it could be a pontil bottle?

The pontil mark or punt mark is a scar or mark where the pontil or punty was broken from a work of blown glass. The presence of such mark indicates the glass was hand blown, the absence indicates a mold blown. Difficult to say exactly what it was used for ,but very cool bottle and old none the less. Hope this helps. Welcome to CW.

The pontil is under the base of these old bottles. It bears some resemblance to an old mineral water bottle. There is no such thing as a pontil bottle but... that is a mark of when the bottle was moulded. Here is some info which may be helpful...

Thank you Caperkid and PhilDMorris for the information and thank you Caperkid for the welcome. I was hoping there was a website like this one to help me with these items, and I did. Thank you PhilDMorris for your info also.

Thank you again PhilDMorris for that website. I now understand that this bottle I have is either a graphite pontil or a sand pontil which belongs to the folklore era and 1840 to 1860 period. This information has helped me a lot. The bottle must hold some vital information for it to last that long. Thank you very much PhilDMorris.
