    katherines…
    (247 items)

So I have owned the first ornament since the 70s, and recently came across the second ornament in a grab bag. I noticed one is a girl angel with a bell and lamb, the other is a girl with lambs and a lantern. I tried to find out if there was any significance to the two ornaments, but can't seem to find anything. If any of you know what it might mean, please feel free to share. Thanks for looking.

I would say that the lamb represents purity or new life, perhaps the angel represents the Angel Gabriel announcing the birth of Jesus. I love both of these.
I just bought a small box of Christmas ornaments that are labeled "Grandma's 1940 Christmas ornaments". I paid 50 cents for the box of ornaments at a yard sale. I'll post them later in the year.

Thanks for the love, brunswick, mikelv85, jscott0363, and NevadaBlades. :)

Scott, I did see some of those symbolic meanings when I researched this earlier, my guess is this is related to some kind of legend or Biblical story, maybe? Thanks for your help, and I look forward to seeing your ornaments, sounds like you got a bargain! :)

Jesus is the Lamb of God. The perfect sacrifice. The Lamb was born at Christmas to be led to the slaughter later. (Religions are weird and allare cults.)

I was steeped in Catholicism until I was old enough to break free.

EVERYTHING in the Catholic religion is ritual and symbolism.

The angels represent the Heavenly host who came to the shepherds who were tending their flocks of sheep in the fields to tell of Jesus' birth.

Have you never seen The LIttle Drummer Boy? It's the Christmas myth in cartoon form. Or A Charlie Brown Christmas & Linus' speech?

" And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men."

Lambs are very big in the bible in general, too. Jesus was both the lamb and the shepherd.

      John the Baptist said:

The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!"

Meaning Jesus would die as a sacrifice for the sins of the world.

These are so nostalgic for me - we had lots of these plastic decorations when I was a kid. I clearly remember they were fun to chew on; all spongy and vanilla smelling.
You must never have discovered that!

Thanks for the love, TassieDevil, and aura. :)

Celiene, I know something of these symbols and meanings myself as I was raised Catholic. My guess was that there was a solid Biblical story or parable involved with these ornaments but you may be correct, this may be more a compilation of religious symbolic meanings than a story. Thanks for your help.

Karen, no I never chewed on any ornaments, lol! Thanks for sharing that memory, I love stories like yours. :)

And so too was I, but in faith, not in dogma. I think also there are differences among certain cultures where the practice of religion serves a variety of purposes. Not all of them evil, quite the opposite, although I suppose my atheist friends would not allow this to be true, and I respect their opinion. In any case, as we all know, religion can be a controversial subject and I don't want to turn this thread in that direction. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. :)

You can never wash away all the 'Catholic' no matter how hard you try. It's funny - my mother was UBER Irish Catholic. HER mother was not. The good thing about my mom, though, was when she realized she lost the battle when we became teens, she just let it go. LOL! AFTER we were confirmed, of course.

Oh yes, those of us who were raised in the faith never entirely leave it. As St. Francis Xavier said, give me the child and I will give you the man. I wasn't happy growing up in the Church but now see the benefits of it, after discarding or ignoring what never made sense. I didn't raise my kids in the faith, though, the little heathens. On balance, I got the better part of the bargain. :)

      Thanks for the post!!

I wonder will there ever * Be Peace on Earth * anymore? The world is changing and Not for the Good. I worry about the future these days.......

I am Thankful to have lived my young days during a time when life was simple, relaxing, and peaceful. I do not know what the world will be like in 30 to 50 years......and I am concerned. Probably will not live to see it. Some countries are already having real issues !!!

Thanks for the post.......as gives time to reflect!!

Bless, Rose, thank you for your comment. Well, I think we are on the brink of a new paradigm but what exactly it will be we don't know. Sometimes I'm hopeful that science will save us, sometimes I worry that there isn't enough time to come up with all the solutions needed. It's a sort of race at this point, maybe we'll go extinct, or maybe we'll live forever. And that in itself creates problems. I guess we have to do what we've always done, hope for the best and prepare for the worst. :)

Haha, hehe, that must be how Karen knows so much about glass!! HUM don't give this dumb arse any ideas!!
Actually and because Katherine is requesting this not be turned into a religion thing, I googled it and think the ornaments are different interpretations about a story in the bible of a child taking her lambs to earn money for the family. I could probably find it but.. I can't find the ornaments here on the fly either.
I am also worried and concerned about this world. Whatever belief you were raised in may not be your choice but when you are raised to hate that is the seed of terror today. Don't think we can find an answer on the internet for that one.
