I believe this might be a jewelry or makeup box of some kind. I got it years ago from a friend but have no idea as to its origin. It looks like it might have had some kind of cream or something in the small tray sections many years ago. It is about 2 x 4 inches aprox. Anyone have any thoughts?
This looks like a ladies vanity box to me. Jewelry and makeup both would have been kept here. What is the box made of?
Robin, Thanks for the info. I believe it may be pewter or something similar. I think decoration is a thin piece of steel or silver.
It does not look like metal. The tray insert has chips on the corners, looking at them closely may help determine the material. You did not mention the weight. I'd guess gesso-covered or lacquered wood or some kind of compound. It looks like it needs a cleaning and may reveal beautiful colors.
