I bought this mask at an antiques fair a couple of years ago, I regard it as one of my best buys. The mask is from Bali and is made of very light wood.
It's intended to be used for the Indonesian traditional dances called "Wayang Topeng". It portrays Prince Panji, a legendary prince in Indonesian folklore.
It's incredibly detailed, down to the carved hairs on its moustache or the cut glass on its teeth. I'm not too sure of when it's made, but I'd guess late 19th centuary, maybe earlier. The motif and style of mask is quite common (just google "panji mask"), but few are of the same quality and condition as this one.
It reminds me of Nintendo's Waluigi.
I love it.
WONDERFUL WAYANG !!!
