N.Y.S. would be New York State. Maybe it's a key to the city of New York? What does your friend know about it, and from where did your friend get it?

Hi my friend doesn't know anything about it she got to her in a box of family photos from someone who passed away in her family, she has asked family members but nobody knows anything about it.

N.Y.S. could also be National Youth Service or National Youth Sports, both legitimate organizations which may have given out a mock key as an award. However, like New York State there doesn't seem to be any connection to "Brave Key" or 1927. A key to New York City would have "New York City" on it and traditionally be much larger and fancier.
Your friend is not asking the right questions. Of the people in the photos: which ones were alive (and were children or young adults) in 1927; what cities did they live in; were they active in any organizations? I'll bet NY has nothing to do with New York and S signifies "school" or "society" or the like. "Brave Key" might signify taking a step/joining/advancing in/making a commitment in an organization, or the acceptance of an idea that "unlocks" some special knowledge or privilege. (Think symbolism such as in religion or Freemasonry, etc.)

I also couldn't find any connection to New York State and Brave Key. Nothing at all came up on my search. Your friend will be the only one who can dig up info about this key, since nobody here would know the history behind it.

Here's another tack: a "brave key" might be a personal, tangible reminder of an individual's commitment to something; like the coins that AA members carry to remind themselves of their commitment to sobriety. As such it will be pretty esoteric. Here's a maudlin quote from a modern website to illustrate the point: "That’s part of the reason we chose to include a key in the 2014-15 MOPS Membership welcome kit. It’s a symbol we can daily put on to remind us to live the bravest version of ourselves. It’s a token we can reach up and touch in those moments we need a reminder to be brave. And, with solidarity, we’ll be wearing our keys together." Yada, yada, yada. You will have to find the significance of "N.Y.S." to unlock this mystery. (pun intended)
