The short jacket is called an Ike jacket by collectors. Insignia shows that the wearer earned a combat patch with the 5th Infantry Division (right shoulder) and later served with the 3rd Army (A patch on left shoulder). The 5th Infantry landed at Normandy about a month after the Invasion landings.

He also sports a Combat Infantryman Badge (CIB) [the blue rifle with wreath]-- he also wears Infantry branch insignia.
