I'm not sure that this is a Medal or a coin that was mounted to be worn as a pendant. I looked through all the Islamic countries in my World Coins book but could not find anything like it. There is a halo around the turbaned head of the bearded fellow on the Obverse but I don't think that coins or medals depicting Mohammed were ever made or allowed. Can anyone read the writing along the edge of the coin or on the back? Any help would be appreciated. The original chain and coin were black but cleaned up nicely. I don't usually clean coins but this could be a medal after all and it has been made into a pendant. BOB

It definitely Orthodox of some sort. Coptis, Russian, Greek, Byzantine? I wish your pictures were better. Can't see lettering.

Islam has no human icons. At all.

Guru Nanak was the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus.

On the reverse is the first word 'Ik' of the Mool Mantar.

The Mool Mantar (also spelt Mul Mantra) is the most important composition contained within the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of the Sikhs; it is the basis of Sikhism. The word "Mool" means "main", "root" or "chief" and "Mantar" means "magic chant" or "magic portion".

Ik- There is ONE(Ik) reality, the origin and the source of everything. The creation did not come out of nothing. When there was nothing, there was ONE, Ik.

Vetraio50....You are absolutely right! The "fresco" of Guru Nanak on the Wikipedia page is almost identical to the medal. I would have never thought of Sikhism. I suppose the halo and the star on the back with the lettering led me towards Islamic themes. I truly appreciate your fabulous research.
Thank you also to blunderbuss2 and Celiene for your help and comments. Thanks also to mikelv85 and TassieDevil and vetraio50 for the love.
I'll take some better photos today to allow for more detail. Bob
