I don't have a beaver to pose in this hat. So my dog Buddy volunteered. That's an attempt at humor. This is a man's vintage hat in the box. Not antique, but old enough. Hat is in very good shape. Well cared for.

      mareredware,
This is awesome!! This was a VERY expensive hat in it's day. After the 19th century, most hats were made, or covered, with a mixture of beaver, ermine and rabbit fur. So, a hat made from 100% beaver fur, such as this, would have been a higher end hat for sure. By the way, Buddy looks great in this hat. He may well have started a new trend:)
I have several antique beaver fur top hats in my collection. If you like hats, you should check 'em out.

I do believe that is a felt hat in a different box... That is not beaver skin.

Michael-D- Shops (Michael D. Shop For Men) was in Detroit & Grand rapids. Earliest reference I can find is in a 1958 yearbook, and they went out of business in 1976. They were located at 2026 E. 8 Mile Road, Detroit. They also had a store at the Belmont Center in Detroit.

So - these are a married pair.

Again, I appreciate the information from the detectives on this sight! I don't know what beaver skin would look or feel like. I think I am pleased to know it is man made felt and not the skin of an animal! The box and hat were donated to my sister's Church sponsored resale shop several years ago. I don't know any other history than that. I do like the box and the hat is quite nice. I would not have been pleased had I spent big bucks on a hat I thought to be rare! thanks for the info Celiene!
and thanks for the loves and lovely comments to kyratango and aura! always appreciated!

Well, beaver felt is made from beaver fur & not the skin. Beavers don't volunteer to donate their fur ! LOL !!

They make felt out off beaver fur? Oh - not skin. Do they still make felt out of beaver fur?

Either way - the hat is From Missouri, the box from Detroit.

ARGHH! But my guess would be the beavers weren't released after their fur was harvested. I don't want to know any more than I want to know about the coon skin caps and the poor raccoons who volunteer their fur and tails!! ;) ;)
    13. blunderbuss2 blunderbuss2, 8 years ago
Yeah ! Those poor bald beavers & raccoons. Actually all the beavers I've met in recent years have been bald, but doubt it was made into felt. Maybe dental floss ? Feel free to delete ! LMAO !!

My keys are on a racoon tail keychain. People are continually thinking I have a cat in my purse...

Continued...starting with your research, Celiene., I've viewed beaver fur hats and beaver felt hats online and my hat sure resembles the beaver felt. IF it is...one sells for $500 to $600! This is pure speculation re: the box and hat coming from Detroit and Missouri...I assume the person who owned this hat owned more than one hat and quite possibly hat and box were switched. It bothers me that the hat does not have a tag identifying it as beaver. I would think that would be a point of pride with the maker. I am still working on a positiv id! Thanks.
