This interesting set has a combination of 10 different markings. I found it in a thrift store and could only see one mark at the time.
The pieces feature a very Asian motif, but were mostly made elsewhere.
Some are not marked, one has red numbers and the rest are:
JAPAN
MZ Altahau CM-R CZECHOSLOVAKIA
NORITAKE NIPPON
KPM GERMANY
Thomas Bavaria
Epiag Czechoslovakia
Epig D.F. Czechoslovakia
BASSETT CZECHOSLOVAKIA
I really have no clue as to the age of the pieces. I am sure there is a name for this style if there were so many makers.
Any info would be helpful.
Huh. Well this is just my off the wall crazy thought, but could have belonged to a collector who deliberately gathered examples. Many collectors are specialists who like to collect in a certain area, though this is rather esoteric, I've known collectors like that, here and elsewhere. I could be way off the mark, of course.
Thanks Katherine, I do believe it belonged to a collector, but of what? All the patterns are so similar, surely there is a name for the style.
It is true that some companies did have identical pattern, but mostly in transfer ware. This is very odd, and I’m wondering if they were blanks for a decorating studio.
Decorating studios, like Stouffer of Chicago and Pickard would buy blank white pieces from makers all over the world, have their artists paint them and add their mark, and sometimes the artist's name prior to going on the retail market.
PS I’ve never seen that Noritake mark on a piece of china, so maybe they used that just to sell to decorating studios??
