We heard about this awesome mini P-51 in a classified ad and immediately went up to buy it only to find that instead of being 6' wide it is 11.5' wide and about 10' long! Ever wonder how to Carry a plane 11' wide in the back of your pickup? Neither had we until we saw our challenge!!! A little "farm creativity" and we had it in the truck and were on our way home with a slightly over width (about 10' wide) truck and a smiling driver. Needless to say, we gave a wide birth to the Semis on the drivers side of our truck!
We can't wait to get our new find on a pole in the Lakeside Storage free museum.
Very early model & I'm wondering about the flat deck on top of the cowling.
Blunderbuss2,
My thoughts exactly? Since it was so much work to build the mold to make this fiberglass replica, why not make it as accurate as possible? Oh well? For the $100 we paid for it we aren't complaining, but the people that commissioned it to be made in the first place should have complained a lot!

Thx for the love it
I'm not saying that there wasn't some early model or prototype that had that deck, I'm just not familiar with it. I'm curious if we come up with it.
Blunderbuss2,
Seems like I've seen a pix of an earlier fighter with the deck on the cowl but it wasn't a P-51 A.

I was thinking the same thing too. For some reason the nose reminds me of the P-40 Tomahawk. Haven't got time to play around with it. I'm back on the "Rock" & everything screwed up while I was gone. My SXM driver's lic. even expired. Guess that's better than my birth certificate expiring !
looks a bit like a Spitfire Mk XII

Exactly! Thx for the cool pix of the exact plane in real life.
TallCakes,
Check out the pix that Recordmantime sent me.
Blunderbuss2,
Ck out the pix that Recordmantime sent me
Yeah, the P-40 also has that ram-air scoop like the A-36 but your's is wide & flat. We'll come up with an answer. Have to admit that I have never heard of the A-36 Apache. I used to know everything, - but I've forgotten a lot ! LOL !! TallCakes comes up with the Spitfire mk XII & that has credit, plus the wings are clipped . Your tail doesn't quite meet the Spitfire. Interesting & curious as to what comes up. I got a KY driver's lic., but then found out that puts me on the jury duty list ! I'm not flying up there for that !

Recordmantime,
Hmmmmm? My new plane is looking more like a P-40 than a P-51 all the time. The tail is also a giveaway. What do u think?

During that war, there were so many prototypes & changes in models of each, that it's hard to nail down. None of our entries have the wide flat deck as your's, but still think I have seen that before. Just maybe not quite as wide. The scoops seen under the belly of P-51's & under the wing of Spitfires are for oil coolers. Either carb., injected, turbo, blower etc., you need air, & ram air helps. There have to be air scoops for that. There seems enough interest going here, where we will figure it out.
I think we are getting close to nailing it down, but no cigar yet ! At least got all us "wing nuts" thinking in the same direction for a change. LOL !!

While I realize that the hood is your question, I still see the tail as more like the P-40 than the P-51, even the early versions?

Amazing savings of time! The teeth on the real P-51 I personally designed and painted by hand. This will be a lot easier! Thank u very much!
