Hi, I found this saw which I believe maybe of USA origin? Can anybody help me identify maker? Also there is an inscription, plus signature on one end which is obscured by an area of discolouration. I would like to know if anyone can also tell me the wording plus signature? Much appreciate anyone's help in this matter.

Sheffield, England. I typed "English Pattern" (from the ribband at the bottom of the etch) and Wikipedia immediately took me to "tenon saw" but there was no use of the term English pattern in the entry so how did they know to link it??? Anyway: Despite being on Twitter < https://twitter.com/JPJTOOLS > and a reference to their being in business for 125 years, JPJ Forge Form tools seem to not have a presence on the internet.

Hand miter saw, minus the "box". Why complicate it ?
Because, bb2, a miter saw is longer (24" +/-). Shorter backsaws, in the 12" range, are called tenon saws because they were used without a box to make tenons for wood joinery. There are a half-dozen different backsaws distinguished by their size.
