I found this at a local thrift store for less than a dollar. It was at the bottom of a bin among a bunch of other baskets that were all made in China. I about screamed like a little school girl...which would have be hilarious, being that I have a foot long beard and look like a biker. :)
I have no idea it's history or even if it is native. I would love to know more about it, regardless. It is 12 1/2 inches across. Thank you and I love this site!
It's a coiled palm fiber basket from Africa, made by the Hausa tribe of Nigeria and neighboring Niger.
Thank you for your comment!
Not that I don't believe you, but could you give me some examples of similar baskets for comparison?
Great find, I would have screamed too, beautiful basket.
We bikers are pretty cool folks too. Just saying, lol. I love
this site too, it is fun and lots of good folks here. ;)
They are illustrated in "Art of the Basket, Traditional Basketry from Around the World" by Bryan Sentance, and a similar one is featured on the front cover. Or a web search for "Hausa Basket" will show examples. Here's a current eBay listing, as well: 191800257867
Great! Thank you so much for the info!
