I have this AWESOME antique Drill. It looks like it adjusts horizontally and vertically. It's VERY heavy so I haven't tried to adjust it, but I would like to know more about it. How does one use it, and what was it's original purpose. It's really neat, and used to belong to my late father, (who ran a sawmill most of his life, but was literally a jack of all trades.) He had sheds and barns full of old tools, and antiques in general. I just never got around to asking him about this particular one. Can anyone tell me anything about it? Thank you.

This is called a "Boring Machine". As you point out it can stand upright and be clamped onto a horizontal surface, folded and used horizontally, or mounted on a post - any way that the handles can be cranked all the way around. It was used for general purpose hole-making and for boring holes, for wooden pegs (tree-nails), through mortise-&-tenon joints when framing houses and barns.
