This black opal and diamond ring probably dates circa 1910.
The opal is just over 4mm, about a third of a carat. The 10x 2mm diamonds are old European or transitional cuts, also totaling about 0.3ct. They're set in a platinum top over 18ct yellow gold.
These early rings are a little window into the history of opals. This one has a black opal from Lightning Ridge with a bright red flash. It must have been a fabulously exotic thing to see or own in the Edwardian era, just a few years after these stones first came to the market in 1904.
It was probably an engagement ring, and I imagine a proud bride-to-be receiving this from her (maybe Australian?) suitor, then showing it to her friends and family, it would've been something very special back in the day.

Hi Bluboi, if you ran into my wife in the mall you'd see a good few of them lined up, she's still trying to grow more fingers so she can wear more of them at once!
