I recently acquired an intact Civil War era photo album. The photographs are in incredible condition for their age and are tintypes and carte de visites (CDV).
The second photo shown here is known as the "Apotheosis," and it is actually a card inserted into the first page of the album. During the Civil War era, many photo albums had this picture (anonymous artist) as the first image one saw upon opening an album. It shows George Washington welcoming Abraham Lincoln into heaven. I was fascinated upon learning of this.
Nice Civil War era photos. I love looking through these albums, searching for a prize image!

The Lincoln Apotheosis view is fairly common-- often found in Civil War era albums.

"Apotheosis (from Greek ????????? from ????????, apotheoun "to deify"; in Latin deificatio "making divine"; also called divinization and deification) is the glorification of a subject to divine level."
Wow - I had no idea!
