Many soldiers after W.W.II brought home souvenirs of their time in Europe. The soldier who brought back this large 15 1/4" wall plaque must have had a large, well padded ruck sack. I peeled back the sticker to be able to see the mark on the back which dates the wall plaque between 1874-1909. The "Mercury" Villeroy & Boch mark indicates that it was made at the Wallerfangen factory which was in operation from 1789 to 1931. Most of the old original records of this company were destroyed by English air bombing during the second world war. Other markings are a 2427A and an impressed KAO. The scene is of a sailboat sailing by a Windmill with an orangy sky in the background. Surprisingly, it has no crazing whatsoever. It was picked up at an estate sale last week. RER
Truly a fantastic piece! Amazing that this young soldier made it home safely with this and not breaking or chipping it. A wonderful piece indeed!
