This is an old oil painting. The four dogs are beautifully done.
You can tell it is very old from the wood around the canvas.
Love these dogs, but wish I could find out more about this painting.

I have been trying to find out who the artist is. It is signed in the upper left corner and looks like g. Jarden, but I have looked at all the Jarden's on Ask Art and none have this style.
The back is in French and I have a person who speaks French trying to tell me what it says.

If anyone recognizes this artist style, please let me know.

Could be G Jardin but be aware of the style of the painting not the subject if you start searching.

Second word might be docteur meaning doctor, third word looks like ete which means summer, second line is blanc meaning white, last part says "with all my sympathies". The third line is the date but I can only make out the year, '48. What a cool piece. Maybe it was painted from one friend to another upon the passing of a beloved pet.

It says: " au docteur et à Mme Georges Blanc, avec toute ma sympathie", to the doctor and Mrs Georges Blanc, with all my sympathy.

This being rather a condolence phrase, I agree with Rhunt44 about a pet loss!

      Can only read 48 too!

I think the artist name is Jardin, mostly French :-)

Nice painting, love the doggies :-D

Thank you kyratango and rhunt44 for reading the French. I will look for French painters that lived in 1848 and 1948. Love the research.

I think it was a person that died because the dogs are waiting expectantly by a door.

      Hello bonbonbon!

      Happy New Year!
Just wonder if you got any news about the artist G Jardin ??. One in my french familybranch have3 the small painting here used as profilepicture. It has been
at "Exposition de Monte Carlo (18)48 as marked a tergo.
Anyway Monsieur Jardin seems to have been a known artist " dans l'epoque".
      A bientôt!

Thank you so much ujal2, now I have another place to go and do some research.
I put the paintings side by side, and yes, the style is very similar. Happy New Year, I hope you are celebrating tonight. It must by night there already. Party On. Bonnie
