    Hello everyone.

Pretty excited.... this gorgeous brooch arrived today.

It is hallmarked 9ct gold with a beautiful opal.

The brooch itself is one & a half inches long. The opal is 18mm long x 10mm wide. The seller listed as a solid opal.....I am not sure....also the type of opal it is was not listed. (bought for bargain price $124.00)

I have looked through all of KiwiPauls beautiful opals.....but I just don't know!!!! I hope he will stop by and have a look......

Had no idea opals were so difficult to photograph....hope you can see these photos well enough to enjoy this brooch.

    Thanks, Judy

      Wooooh! Judy!

      Beautiful treat for yourself :-))
The mount is superb, as your opal pics!

From the high shine of the upper part of the opal, I suspect it is a triplet, with opal potch under a nice opal slice and crystal upper layer.
      Will see Paul's opinion :-)

Thanks Pascale, I think I had been watching it for over a week and there wasn't much interest in it so I swooped. I love the setting too, which surely would come under the Arts and Crafts period and Australian made as well!! Will probably never know the maker, but that's ok, I just love it!
Opals are really so hard to identify aren't they....thank you for your thoughts and the link, very interesting......and very hard to see anything they describe with the way it has been set I think! I certainly won't be disappointed if it turns out to be a triplet, I just love it! Thanks again.

Lovely piece, I see you have a passion for opals. I have to agree with kyra, the mount is beautiful.
    7. kyratango kyratango, 8 years ago
Right, as the stone is mounted, you can't see the edge! These triplets are beautiful too, giving a very nice bright opal color :-)

What I love too is the diagonal position of it in the brooch!

Hi Jean, I think I am getting a passion for them now .....thanks very much for your nice comment and for the love.....always appreciated!

Gobsmacked! I saw the thumbnail and got so excited!
I think it's fantastic you have this piece of jewellery to go with your other Aussie pieces. Isn't the metalwork wonderful!! Opal looks a nice lightning ridge to me, but I'm sure as hell no opal expert. Solid, triplet, doublet? Does look like it has a top on it.

Thanks so much Karen, lovely of you to be so excited for me....I really do appreciate that you are.....such a great comment!! and it is beautiful whichever way the penny drops! Thanks for the love too!

Hi Tassie, great brooch! This will be a quality White Cliffs doublet, with a backing of opal potch, circa early 1900's. You can see a similar one here: http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/166784

      You got a bargain!
    12. kiwipaul kiwipaul, 8 years ago
Hi Tassie, looking at it again, and noticing the little flowers, I'm now thinking School of Rhoda Wager, circa 1930's. I think Jewels1900 has pointed out pieces on CW with similar designs by an unknown Sydney jeweller around that time.

There was a resurgence of White Cliffs opal in the 1930's, I talked about it here: http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/165795

I'm envious! Your brooch is stunning!

Hi Kiwi, thanks so much for having a look......your ability to identify is just wonderful.
I had looked at both those links and read all your great descriptions.......but didn't dare to hope that it would be White Cliffs, and if it was, was it the early period or the 3os.....
I agree about it being "School of Rhoda Wager".....it just has that look doesn't it. I am sure you are right with the 1930's .......from what I can tell, the hinge would be correct for that time. Just checked the hinge on another "school of" that I haven't posted yet that is the same and it is dated 1930s to 40's. Also checked the hinges on the earlier Colonial/Goldfields pieces and they are totally different. So 1930s School of Rhoda Wager White Cliffs Opal Brooch it is!!!!!

Very happy with that result Kiwi and can't thank you enough for taking the time to help me here, and for all the terrific detailed information you have with each of your posts and your willingness to pass on your knowledge.

What a beautiful setting this has. I know absolutely nothing about opals, only that I think they're very breakable? A lovely brooch.
