Here is another tool found in Grandma's attic. I do not know what it is or how it was used. It appears to have a blade on one side, so I assume it was used to cut something. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
This is a button-hole cutter for making clothing - especially heavy coats and the like. It slices the button slit and punches out a small round area, nearest the edge of the cloth, for the thread which holds the button on to pass through without stressing that end of the button hole. After cutting, the edges of the cut are overcast with thread to strengthen them and prevent fraying. As you can see, the cutting blade can be replaced to make longer or shorter cute depending on the size of your button.
That makes sense because my great grandfather owned a taylor shop in Smithfield, West Virginia. Thank you! :)
