I recently bought this brooch which I consider was a very good price. I believe it to be Bernard Instones work with the flowers and leaves ticking all the boxes, however it could also be Shipton & Co myself and Jewels1900 believe Bernard Instone did work for Shipton & Co when he passed on his company to his sons in 1963. I personally think this is a unusually brooch by him, I know he used moss agate but this is a extremely large piece. The moss agate has been cleverly mounted with tiny prongs around the stone to let the light through. It is marked for sterling silver, the back is his usual neat work which you expect from Bernard Instone. Any comments would be much appreciated on whether you believe this brooch is the work of Bernard Instone.
    Many thanks for looking.

Vintage Sterling Moss Agate Bernard Instone Brooch Pin English Arts & Crafts, Correct! Somewhere on the back and often very lightly stamped should be BI. Get a good magnify glass. Side mark is 100% by Bernard.

Fantastic piece obviously made by a great silversmith. Maybe he found that great piece of agate and just had to use it!

Hi Dizzydave, most of Instone's work wasn't marked, as was the likes of Amy Sandheim, Sybil Dunlop and Dorrie Nossiter, for some reason they preferred not to mark their work. I suppose the give away to this brooch being Bernard Instone's work is the Sterling Silver marked on the side, I have a lot of his work marked in this way. Many thanks for your help, it's much appreciated.

Hi Karen, you talked on another post of mine about you being interested in buying something affordable by Bernard Instone. I was very lucky with this brooch it was very cheap. There are still good pieces out there, be patient I'm sure something will come along. You made a interesting remark about the moss agate, yes it makes sense that he would have made the mount to show the stone in the best possible way. I haven't seen another piece by him like this brooch. Karen I really appreciate your interest in my Instone collection, it makes it all worth while. :-)

Thank you nutsabotas, for your comment, to be honest I do think the moss stone as come out really well, some pieces I can't always get the essence of the piece.

What a beautiful slab of moss agate! Love how the light shines through it :)

Yes it is a large piece of moss agate. I like the way it has been cut, I would have thought that it would been a difficult procedure, to have cut the stone in that way. Thank you very much for leaving your lovely peddle.
