We called them brush axes. This one is not very old.

Ok, so the total length is about 26.5" and the overall head is about 4.5" x 6". It definately has a smooth removable blade which appears to be finely honed. Overall is not not heavy enough to cut branches. My 85 yr old neighbour said he thinks he remembers something like this as a kid, used for chopping into pieces rabbits and chickens, small game. I have 2 more photos, have to figure out how to upload. I still have to look up forestry brush cutting tools and brush axes. Could n't find Husqvarna that looks like this tool. Thanks everyone.

Well, my old friend may have used it for cutting up meat; lots of people multi-purposed tools. But I think the brush axe wins the prize! Now I want to find a video on how it's used. What would be the advantage over a machete or parang type tool?
