Antique oil of a Spitz Dog with a date that appears to be 1852. There is a signature but I have not been able to decipher the name. It is under glass. Once I get the glass removed, I should be able to see the signature more clearly. This came from a neighbor's estate sale. The neighbor was an antique dealer for many years and this was hanging in in her living room. It is very large and very heavy. There are a set of what appears to be old skeleton keys on the floor in front of the dog. It measures roughly 31X26 in the frame.

Take it out of the frame. Maybe there is something on the back. I can't recall- should oils be behind glass? I seem to remember hear no on Antiques roadshow. Or are there two schools of thought?

Celiene, Glass protects oils but I hate them under glass. I am going to take the glass out but it will be complicated because individual pieces of nailed wood are holding the painting in place. I have tried and tried to figure out who the artist is to no avail. Hoping to examine the signature better out of the frame. Thank you for so much help!
