is this spanish? very old . not that well made but for its age maybe its good.
no idea at all about it. the owner isnt around to ask.
about 8 inches long when open.

When you lift up the ring, does it free the blade & have small humps where it hinges so that it can semi-lock in diff. angles ? If so, it is what we commonly called a ratchet knife in Jamaica. They were designed for peeling fruit but Jamaicans often peeled each other with them.
Spanish or French. It looks like a style (the constricted waist) used by a French maker named Girodias. The SHAPE goes back into the mid-19th century but the overall appearance of this one looks much newer - perhaps 1960's. If the handle panels are painted wood then it is fairly recent. It's hard to tell with out having it in hand.
One of our Jamaican gate guards brought a "ratchet knife" back last week & was showing it to me. I'll try to take a pic tomorrow & poste it for comparison.
i found a pic of a girodias knife. this looks soooo similar. i believe the inserts are silver. apears to have a name on the blade. worn almost away. i will repost a new pic of the blade. it is not a ratchet knife. just open and closed positions. cant tell what its made of. the patina? is very similar to the girodias knife, sort of painted woody looking plastic.
I've seen and owned several of the old Girodias knives and the panels were all made of dark cattle horn. This one looks painted. Also, the fittings were brass and the pins were not the large round-headed ones seen here.
