Hello CW friends!
Today we have my Victorian era English made leather top hat case. This one is the rarest one in my collection. It was made by the W. Austin Company in Liverpool. This one was made in 1836.
This one is in really nice condition still and, with the exception of the single broken latch strap, is nearly 100% complete. Very supple leather that's nicely tooled on the top and sides of this case.
The name of the original owner is still etched into the top of the leather case. I cannot make out the name completely.
I'll post the interior of this case in my next post.
Thanks for stopping and having a look!
Scott
Amazing case Scott.
I can imagine even then these were an expensive item, designed to carry and expensive hat. So much thought in the design of this so the hat fits perfectly.
Karen,
I agree that these cases were a well thought out design. I can't help but try and imagine the owner, what they were like, where they traveled to what kind of life they lived.
Thanks so much for the awesome comment, the love and for stopping by. Always very truly appreciated!!!

Karen's comment was interesting. I love knowing what things used to cost.
I believe this posts answers my previous question. ;))
Very cool piece. :)
what a very cool collection jscotto!
Just beautiful!!! I would love to have one!!!! either one! hat or case would do.......
OneGoodFind,
Back in the mid-1800's a full sized travel trunk would have cost $2.00 to $400. So, I'll assume that something like this would have been $1.00 to $2.00 which would still have been a pretty fair amount of money in those days.
Thanks so much for the cool comment, the love and for stopping by. Always so very much appreciated!!!
ho2culcha,

Thank you Judy!!!
There aren't too many from this period and this design, but there are many, like the others I have, that you can find at estate auctions and online. I hope you get one of both. Thanks for the lovely comment and for stopping by. Always a pleasure to have you drop in.

Simply amazing -- I have been away for a while and catching up a bit... this stylistically is so cool... love the tooling on the leather... you are working up a museum quality collection js... just sayin'
Wow, thank you trunkman!! I do love my hat cases for this period. It's just becoming far too difficult to find these items in condition that are not too far gone to restore. This one was in amazing condition when I found it. A very lucky man for sure!
