This little lion dog traveled a very long way to be my guardian! He's made of some sort of horn, and I just love the carving and the way the light hits it and shows a beautiful vivid red patina.

    Update 7/24/16
I have done a lot of research on my little guardian, and I think that he's made of either Ox or Rhinoceros horn that has begun to turn translucent.
That explains the glowing red around his eyes and feet and the other amber looking coloration.

I'm really curious as to the material.

No this is definitely made of horn - my best guess is water buffalo

Sorry blunder buss ... it's just that I am studying and trying to collect by becoming knowledgeable about Asian art and these types of comparisons done without any regard to fact undermine my collection

Love it! From the pics it is carved, not molded as cheap Aliexpress items :-)
I don't know if the color is as reddish in person and was thinking some kind of amber.

Kyra tango I thought that too from the pictures, but there is a horn grain especially noticeable in inside .. I will try to post better pictures

Wow - Kyratango you are right! It was sold to me as horn, and I saw the grain pattern so was thinking it was horn, but you got me thinking and I examined it through the light and the grain I was seeing are the marks from carving the inside. It is amber! Thanks!

Now to determine what kind of amber.
Light weight, float when submerged in salt water... Google search for the tests :-)

Yeah sorry kyratango - in the daylight I definitely see a vertical growth pattern. It's horn or bone of some type.
