    (11 items)

A gift from an elderly German person whose father was a builder.

Found an item that was similar but nothing in this amber glaze that was Hans Kraut Villingen 1580.....

This measures 12 in tall 10 wide 1.5 inches deep.

    Impressed marking on the back...

Some chips on the front, showing a clay body of sandy color...

Thanks for any real information you might have.

The maker is VEB Ofenkacheln und Keramik Velten
There were 43 tile factories in Velten, Germany in 19th century, only one now (A.Schmidt, Lehmann & Co. GmbH).
They are not rare and rather inexpensive.

I cannot date your tile with precision. It was meant to be a wall plaque but can still be used as a tile. Widely reproduced and even made as Wartburg car souvenir. The mark in yours looks older, ``Historismus`` period (1880`) but more likely much younger because of wall plaque purpose. One may say the hanger was added later and fixed with plaster but oven tiles have entirely different profile and besides, there was a depression to fix the hanger.
