Although no ravishing beauty, nor most peoples cup of tea, I thought I'd share this vase with you because I find it interesting. It was made by Gino Cenedese for Seguso Verti D' Arte circa 1950's and made using the Scavo technique - which is one of the more unusual Murano decors. In Italian, Scavo means digging or excavation, so the item has an elaborately "destroyed" surface appearance as if it was unearthed after a millennia underground. The technique consists of applying various salts and oxides to the glass surface in order to get the desired effect. The surface is then sandblasted giving it the appearance of an archeological vessel akin to an ancient Roman artifact brought to life during excavation. This is a thick, massive vase measuring 11" h X 10" w and weighs a hefty 11 lbs. As always, thanks for looking.

The size and weight of this is heading into Japanese glass territory Rick, although clearly the design is not. It's a class piece - beautiful shape, unusual colour, and the scavo is particularly nicely done. I sometimes think scavo removes the tactility from glass but I just want to touch this!

Thanks so much for the positive comments Rosie and Karen, Swfin, Alan,Kevin, Yvonne Caper and Aura, I appreciate it all!

@Rosie... that's exactly why I find it so interesting... the work that goes into it and the final result...

@Karen... as you can see from the photos there's plenty of texture remaining. They've done an outstanding job on this!

I love that the scavo finish is so irregular and thus so realistic.

Beside some of your amazingly delicate pieces it must look like the bodyguard :)
