Hello everyone.
Pretty excited with this one.....I was researching something else and spotted this by accident...and not even on the auction site!!!! where I usually find my things. I do not expect to ever find the maker of this lol!!
The seller's description was for this brooch being Edwardian, what do you think?
Anyway I have always loved Operculum, have a couple of brooches and stickpins with them.
There is a very tiny plaque with a very difficult to read 9ct!!!
The seller told me she had this brooch cleaned and polished!!! (to within an inch of it's life I think!!) I suppose she thought she was doing the right thing....but I prefer not to go overboard.
Hope you like it. Thanks, Judy
I LOVE OPERCULA !!!!
Here is the link to explain what operculum is...thanks to vertraio

Wow, this is so beautiful!!!
Thanks so much Martika for your lovely comment!!! it is really appreciated...
Many thanks vetraio50, Martika and Caperkid for the love.....always appreciated!!!
Heya Judy - this brooch is a real looker! The detail is super.
I hear you loud and clear about the "cleaning". I once (and only once!) took a silver ring to a jeweler for a light cleaning. He put it in a solution which cleaned it soooo much it looked fake. Years of beautiful patina g-o-n-e......
Judy, your Arts and Crafts brooch is gorgeous, and operculum is a really nice one!
Shame on those who clean so harshly such old pieces...
I tried to restore patina on some silver pieces too shiny by heating them cautiously with a match, but don't know if the operculum can stand with that... Perhaps if you put two pieces of wet sponge on it, hold there with tweezer, while heating (moving the fired match regularly!), then gently use a cloth to clean, it will get more contrast :-)
Thanks Bonnie, glad you like it.....yep, some jewellers and sellers just do not have a clue!!
Thanks very much Pascale for the lovely comment and the tip.....I think I will pass on doing that lol.....I hate to think what "MIGHT" happen!!!! but thanks anyway....
I love operculum too and Judy this is so good in that wonderful mount. I hope if you wear it heaps, everywhere, it gets some patina back!
Do you Karen!!! that's terrific.....thanks and yes, I will be wearing it and hopefully it will just dull off a bit!
Thanks so much Nevada, Bonnie, Scott and Nicefice .....the love and interest is really appreciated!
Thanks Thomas! Only another hour to go and it will be Friday here....I should probably go to bed now!! Thanks for the love too!
Hi Judy, lovely brooch definately art and crafts. I have a pendant with a similar plaque to your brooch. I would say that your brooch, in my opinion is Australian art and crafts.

This pendant has a similar plaque.
Hi Jean, thank you, glad you love it and that you think it is Australian....I thought it would be as well.
I looked through all your listings and Jewel's and Paul's to see if I could find similar looking leaves and design, and did stop and have a good look at the two you have mentioned. I checked the inner edge as well to see if there was anything marked there but no, nothing.
I think I am over thinking about makers.....it is just not going to happen any time soon I think lol......so long as these things are "arts and crafts" pieces I will be happy with that because they are all beautiful!
Thanks for your help Jean....always really appreciated.
Hi Ken, thank you and glad you like it!! I am probably overreacting as far as the cleaning goes lol......happy you think it is ok!
Many thanks aura, Amiar, melaniej, Peasejean55, bratjdd, Manikin and Ken for the love and interest .....I really do appreciate it!
Aussie Arts & Crafts for sure. No idea of maker. I see Operculum in Aussie jewellery every so often, from the 1860's to 1940's or so.
Thanks Jewels, appreciate you having a look!!
