I think this is a honeycomb décor, if a little loose in execution. Some would call it Tango Glass due to the black (amethyst) trim to the rim. However what interests me is whether it is Welz or not. Welz produced honeycomb décors in several colorways, some tightly regular and some less so and in some cases both on the same vase!
I has an eight pointed rim and in image four it's between two examples of Welz honeycomb, showing how the décor can differ.
Height 21.5 cm./8.5 inches
I am curious if the piece has a pontil mark or not?
Hi Craig, no pontil mark.
This sits with the Ceska Lipa work in the Tango exhibitions, I think, where some of mine are placed including a squat vase in this décor with wrapped handles.
Jitka Lnenickova is the authority on this era and should produce a book!
I think it goes in the same groove.
Not that it can be used as a definitive marker, but no pontil mark combined with a decorated rim would indicate the use of a gadget in production, and that would at least mildly support Welz as a possible source of the production.
Thank you both.....much as I expected.
I defer to Craig on my these matters obvs. :-)
I would still thank you for being willing to help, Ian.
On first seeing this vase I realised the décor was the same as that of your four handled vase, which you thought was possibly Kralik. I on the other hand thought the décor was possibly Welz. In my case it's probably a case of wishful thinking :)
I remember seeing this a few weeks ago and forgetting to bid (I should make the effort to be more organised - maybe one day!) and my gut instinct on seeing it was that it was Welz. I confess to not being as clued up as Ian or Craig.
Hi Phil, interesting that some one else thought the same on first sight. No one is as clued up as Craig on this stuff.....but hey it's not life threatening :)
Thank you folks for loving the vase.
