If anyone can help to guide me where to find out more about the history on this violin, I would be grateful. It was passed down from my grandfather who told us that it was made by David Steed who made instruments in Ontario. He made three violins for my grandfather and his two brothers which he gave to them in approx. 1905. This is the only one left in the family. Later in the early Steed made drum sets which one of them was donated to the Royal Museum of Art in Toronto.

I would consider either emailing (with photos) or visiting one of your large music conservatories or museum and check with them. There should be someone who has a good grasp of how to identify the violin, particularly if it was a respected Canadian maker.

Thank you racer4four for the suggestions,, I will contact the museum to see if I can get more info. And to answer Caperkid, no the violin has been sitting in its case for the last 60 years + no one has played it.
