This is a brooch/pin from a family collection. The brooch is made from rough-cut metal, presumably brass, set with roughly cut turquoise stones, green glass and coral-coloured glass. The stones are set in some kind of resin in brass. There is one perfectly spherical turquoise bead which I think is glass - I had originally thought that someone had replaced a missing stone with a more modern one, but I have since seen several similar brooches, and all of them have one or more of these turquoise beads in them!
The seated figure has a carved face, and has two tiny red glass stones on either side of the brass neck decoration, and an archway of coral-coloured glass chips on either side of the body.
The brooch measures 2" in diameter, and has "NEPAL" etched into the back. The pin is a simple "C" clasp. It's very naive but unusual to me!
This probably belonged to my grandmother - her husband was in the merchant navy in the 1920s and '30s, Other examples I've seen claim to be from the early 1900s so that would fit.
Quite unique!
Incredible brooch, very beautiful and unique -- a treasure! :)
Thank you Donthebaptist, Efesgirl, Nicspawee, katherinescollections, valentino97 and Vintageforever for the loves!
Thanks for the comments Efesgirl and katherinescollections, it does seem to be unique - although I've found similar items with the seated figure, no two are the same!
Very interesting!
