I am posting this here because people tend to be really helpful with a variety of topics. I found this in my stream in the backyard today while looking for ancient indian tools. I am wondering: a) if this is quartz; and b) if these inclusions are silver.

There are inclusions that are bright silver in color and ones that look like rusty metal. Some type of iron oxide? No idea what I am even talking about. Thank you!!!

      Or perhaps it is pyrite?

I do gemming sometimes...we usually smash them lightly with hammer, and expose the gems, this may be different...

Quartz, gold & silver often come together in a single package. The silver would not be shiny, so maybe pyrite. Often called"fool's gold" but anybody who has panned gold can tell the diff. a metre or more away.

interesting, thank you mr colorz and blunderbuss for the help. maybe I will try smashing one tomorrow, thanks!

If you "pan" it, remember that iron pyrite is also heavy. Just not as heavy as gold & silver.

I'm thinking it is galena in quartz .

I don't remember "galena" from my rock-hound days of yester-year. Looked it up & guess I have used it. Place in N. AL where we just picked up the heavy earth & chunks, heated it & poured out lead for making bullets & musket balls.

Hi valentino, I will certainly do the research! I am trying now.....but not getting very far..... I have not found indian tools from this type of rock. But today I found 1 or maybe 2 rocks that looked like the could have been hand axes. Not sure what kind of rock. I could post them if you are interested. Thanks for chiming in!

Yes I dig that was found 3ft down on riverbank, but don't know if bottles were thrown on top, or if it was thrown with the bottles and other stuff...found some ww1 navy buttons by it.The Smithsonian has not been able to identify...The material between the two sides looks like turtle shell, and has all the same identical colors, also notice the hand carved hole. Thanks for looking.
