I have a beautiful antique 1894 Elgin pocket watch with chain in working condition. I was trying to determine if this is gold or gold plated. I dont know how to tell the difference and I dont want to acid test this. I was hoping somebody could give me more information on the watch and how to determine the difference between gold and gold plated. The movement number is 5683684. The case number is 2009391. On the inside of the cover where the case number there is a crown with a scale symbol on both sides. There are no other markings. If anyone has any other knowledge on this watch let me know. Thanks.

If it is gold it will definitely be hallmarked somewhere on the case.

I too have an antique Elgin pocket watch & am trying to get any info I can on it. Could you please tell me how did you get the back of the case open to get the movement number?
      Thank you

Hey Kmac You need to be careful there should be a slight groove at the top of you're watch that will open.. try using something with a point but be delicate.

I have an Elgin pocket watch from 1870. The case is marked k18, and also has Wm B W & Co. The serial # on the guts is 107879. Anyone have any info on my watch I would appreciate a reply. Thanks
