Can't anybody help identify what this old tool is? It seems to be for expanding a gland or something using a wooden plunger.
Can anyone tell me what this is?? |

Seating corks in bottles ? Installing tampons in wooden hobby horses ?
lol... I'll go along with seating corks....as far as the hobby horse I'll leave that one alone...smiling
You don't say how large the tool is. It doesn't appear to work for seating corks. If the cork, inside the tool's arms, fits into a bottle's neck, the cork is already too small. It could be a gerbil tool.
The slightly rebated top of the wooden plunger is exactly 1.5" in diameter
Ron. Maybe they used "fartonium" & that expanded the considibble on the cork so that it fit in the identifit snuggly. If that's not it, I'm at a loss without having access to a maladium with Whitworth threads.
Deano27- I'd go with your original assessment - it expands something - possibly the something is then pushed onto something else before it can shrink back(?) The dimples on the arms suggest that was how far you should insert it before engaging the plunger. Just idle speculation.
Ron, I hadn't considered the "dimple factor"and usually pushed beyond that. Let me give this much consideration before I get banned from CW.
My vote is for the expanding glands.
Gillian, you're not helping!! LOL !! LMFAO !! In the interest of (whatever), I step aside !
Remember BB2, "Brevity is the soul of wit."
I think it is a wine corker. Look at this website- scroll down or do a search of the word TOOLS. Look on the table.
It looks like there is one there with a sheath over the tines.
Did you forget to post the link? Why would they put a sheath over it.
I going with a device to insert suppositories.
I was thinking the bumps or dimples on the arms may be where a rubber O ring went to hold the arms in.
The object that you have is for putting rubber linings on the cows milking machines
you slip a rubber coupling over the cows udders when milking them, your hand machine stretches the new rubbers when you have to replace one.
I have two one for external fitting and internal. Regards psblacky
psblacky! Cool! Now the mystery is solved!
