This antique carnival walking "bang stick" dates from around the late 1800's to early 1900's. The top of the cane is a cast-iron duck head painted green and yellow. This cane was designed and used to set off paper caps for a surprising bang! The shaft of the cane is wood.

I am not quite sure how this works but I found it interesting and picked it up in a local shop today.

You find such weird and fabulous things VL! I can see the Green Lady imperiously banging this when attention was required.
I think a paper cap strip would slide into the notch and when banged on the ground the pin slides up and sets it off. I daresay it's seized with age.

racer, Thank you! Yes, the Green Lady likes to hide this under her kimono and scare all of the little kids in the neighborhood. I do love "weird" things for sure!

Reminds me exactly of an old illusion: The rabbit or duck illusion:

I have (and posted) a carnival bang stick a few months back. I believe that mine is from the 40's or 50's. I never saw one as early as this. It's great! thanks for posting it.

      hotairfan,
Thank you for the comment. I thought that this one looked pretty old whenever I bought it. I just inclused it in with my walking stick collection.
