A discussion came up on the Buttonbytes Button Collectors site about four different sets with round glass insets, with wire backs and frames just like this pair, that could be used as earrings in one direction and dress clips in the opposite direction. Someone believes them to be absolutely to be dress clips, but the pair that I inherited from my great grandmother has a distinctive basket of flowers design that if used as a dress clip, would be up-side-down! These jet or black glass with inset stones are 3/4" x 1 1/8". Have you ever seen this sort of back wire clip before? I looked through 4 collectors books on antique jewelry and found nothing. Please help, and a reference as to verifying the information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
These are earrings, made by either the Castlecraft or Hillcraft Company. The backs are specific to them. https://www.bctreasuretrove.com/category/castlecraft-hillcraft-jewelry/?v=7516fd43adaa
Clementine4, thank you so much for your input. I just knew someone could verify, not just guess and I am so grateful for you sharing your knowledge.
You're Welcome! Not surprised these turned up in a button group, they were often made with Czech glass.
@clementine so these two companies purchased the glass from glass companies in Czechoslovakia....who most likely also made buttons in these same designs and colors. They did not make the glass used in their slide on earrings, is that correct?
Correct, they didn't produce the glass, stones or lucite components. They bought domestically, but also imported from all over the place, not just Czechoslovakia. This is a great link with much better info. If you scroll down, I'm sure you'll recognize the Czech pieces that are identical to common Czech buttons. http://www.hoppersbazaar.com/JJ/jj.html
