This pipe was used by my husband's grandfather who was born in the early 1870's. We don't know where he obtained it, though the family resided in San Francisco from the 1860's til present. We also do not know if the couple is famous or family members. Unfortunately, none of the relatives are left to answer these questions. It makes me think about taking up pipe smoking. :)

I heard from a researcher of Meerschaum pipes, he believes this pipe was carved between 1880 to 1920 in Germany or Austria. (Though my husband's grandfather was smoking it by 1900-1905 according to old family photos) He states the pipe is prior to a date when Meerschaums were routinely signed. Unfortunately, or fortunately, it has been smoked a lot and grandfather's hands wore down the carving some. He was not familiar with two faces on one pipe. Their identities remain unknown, though I'm wondering if they weren't relatives as his ancestors came from Germany to SF while a few remained behind.
