I purchased this at an auction years ago. Nobody knew what it was or what it was for so I bought it. I have asked many many people from antique dealers to people who collect tools with no luck. I would sure love to know what it is for. There is no name on it. The only marks it has are a L and a R. For left and right I think.
I would keep loose small body parts at a distance when playing around with it ! Pic #1 appears that the straight handle is held in the left hand & that the thumb is for lifting the lever that does, whatever. The gears on either side appear to tighten at the same rate. Beyond that ? HELP ! Must be for bailing something or maybe used in GitMo Bay.
This is a wire splicing machine . Possibly for telegraph wires. See J . Barron patent number 713,940 of Nov.18,1902 . It is completely mobile with no provision to mount to a bench .
