Hello everyone.
Just some of the smaller pieces of Australian pottery to show you, collected over the years.
The first two green ones are Casey Ware:
According to Geoff Fords Book - Encyclopedia of Australian Potters Marks 2nd Edition, Casey Ware was established in 1945 in Croydon Sydney NSW by a Mr Kirkwood and Ronald Cooper under the company name K.C. Industries Pty Ltd. This book says that the impressed stamp was used from late 1940's - mid 1960's and that the foil label was used from mid 1950's - mid 1960's.
The second two pictures show a lovely little trough type vase with a seagull perched on the edge.
There is the original foil label for "Gardenia Ware" still attached. I am pretty sure that this label was associated with one of the bigger potteries, Diana or Pates perhaps......
I like them!! and they don't take up too much room!

I see you found my Trove listing on K.C. Industries. Ronald Cooper was the guy's name. The company still survives and thrives at the same address run by family members. The identity of Mr. Kirkwood still evades me. Cooper switched the focus of the company from art wares to industrial ceramics and porcelains.
As regards the Gardenia Ware label, it refers to a pottery set up in the mid 40's here in Sydney by a Greta Gardener. The address in the press for Gardenia was 24 Westwood Street, Pennant Hills, NSW.
That address was for sake in 1938 and was described at that time as being "A delightful and modern Family Residence combining fruit trees garden and fowl runs Intel connecting lounge and dining rooms beautifully finished 3 charming bedrooms and sunroom Also large back verandah, 17 x 11 Bathroom with every convenience kitchen with separate pantry built in cupboards etc Garage Beautifully situated. convenient to Pennant Hills or Thornleigh Station Among nice homes Price reduced by hundreds lo £1295 to bring about immediate sale Small deposit and rent Terms arranged. "
No idea who bought it but Greta Gardener had it as a pottery business in the late forties and early fifties. She was advertising for a "THROWER for Pottery. Full-time or part-time. Urgently wanted. Apply Gerdener. 24 Westwood Street, Pennant Hills. MA2749. " in 1948.
In 1952 there were two similar adverts in the press for a thrower at that address.
According to the Powerhouse Museum there were two people of import there: Greta Gardener and another potter who had emigrated from England and arrived in Sydney about 1944. Her name was Rose Spuller (d.1966) who had worked as a modeller for Wedgwood in England.
That is as much as I know about them at this stage.
Ford's states that they made"vases,bowls,dishes,jugs, sugar bowls, baskets, napkin holders, ornaments etc. decorated with Aboriginal designs, and a few with applied gumnuts and leaves". "Plus a few sculpted figures and miniature mask heads and wheel thrown vases"
Hi Vetraio, I wondered if that was you on Trove with the Casey Ware, it is such a great site isn't it...well done!
Regarding the Gardenia Ware, I saw the powerhouse write up but just wasn't sure. (I must be confusing this pottery with something else I had researched before that was part of one of the bigger potteries).

Makes you wonder how many pieces are still around without the label on them which will never be identified!!

Hi Tassiedevil. Going back over Gardenia. I am part of a Facebook Australian pottery group and today a new article was found .... an old article actually.

I think it is from 1983 and believe there are some inaccuracies .... Rosa Spuller May have not have arrived in Oz until 1952.

Gardenia pieces are fairly rare.

i have a casey ware vase stamped 1987 and it has the remnants of the foil sticker
