I know this is Egyptian because of the symbols. The makers marks are everywhere but so itty bitty tiny. I am wondering the age of this piece. I imagine it is silver. Is it best to leave it or clean it up? Thanks.
I doubt it is very old but think it would look better for display un-polished.
I will not polish it, I will not polish it, I will not polish it.???? So tempted but will restrain myself. Thanks for responding blunderbuss2 and Valentino 97.
What is the makers mark?
I cannot read the marks. I need to get myself a loupe. It has five marks on it Cbill.
You lucky duck. Gorgeous!!! It's silver, I am sure of it. I imagine the thrift shop thought it was brass/base metal because of the color. Egyptian silver is usually .900 grade and marked on the front. Maybe from the 1930s/1940s. I'm excited for you, lol~!!
Thanks Efesgirl. I found it in a small Northern Ontario town when I went up to the cottage. How did that get there?? I like things that are made by hand and you can see the handwork.
Pictures NEFERTITI, which in ancient Egyptian means "the beautiful woman cometh"
So true valentino97. The world is small.
This is useful for dating Egyptian jewellery (when you manage to read the marks!):
